Simply SIx: Olga

1. For many artists, they cite a defining moment for themselves when they knew they wanted to be a singer.  For many it was the appearance of Elvis on the Ed Sullivan show, to another generation it was the Beatles’ appearance on Sullivan half a decade later.  Is there such a defining moment for you?

My pet rabbit was killed by a neighbors dog right before my eyes when I was four. I went home and sat at the piano and wrote my first song which went on and on for a few hours. I remember doing that and I remember thinking that it was totally natural thing to do.

In the acting world, I saw my first play "Annie" when I was 5. I remember thinking that I wanted to be an actress when I grew up while I watched the play. I even remember the scene..."It's  Hardknocked Life"

2. When you’re not creating music what are you listening to?  Who are some of your favorites?

I have 10 hours of my favorite 80's pop songs on my ipod, the ultimate playlist!!   Duran Duran, Simple Minds, Thompson Twins, B52s, John Waite, Lost Boys Soundtrack, Pointer Sisters, Annie Lennox, Bryan Adams, Cyndi Lauper. Also listen to blues; Robert Pete WIlliams, Fred McDowell, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Furry Lewis, Memphis Minnie to name a few.

3. What would you say is your greatest moment so far as an artist, either on record or live?

Recording Jessie Mae Hemphill's final album and documentary "Dare You To Do It Again" was a very very special and amazing event not just for me but all involved with the project. My new album I did with Cody Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) was a truly liberating and inspiring process and revelation. I was recently elected to the board of The Blues Foundation in Memphis TN which is a great honor. www.blues.org

4.  Do you believe music can change the world or is just something to listen to?   How much can music influence current events?
Music is in everything around us and in us. It is the common language of the universe. The sun makes harmonic sounds, the ocean has rhythm, even our own heart beats have their own unique and original song. Music is healing, inspiring and life,  and it is the one common thread that every living thing has within them.

5. How has technology affected the music industry?  How has technology affected your career as a musician?

I've had to hustle harder than ever before and continuously come up with new ways to make money and market myself. Downloads have changed the game of course, but I prefer not to lament, rather embrace it. In truth, it makes it easier than lugging around cds everywhere and storing them in the basement!  More people have access to my music than ever before and I like being able to communicate with people from all over the world.

6.  Now for my Barbara Walters question:  If you were a pair of shoes what type of shoes would you be?
