Paul Thorn was born in Tupelo, Mississippi and raised among the same spirits (and some of the actual people) who nurtured a young Elvis generations before.

Thorn has rambled down back roads and jumped out of airplanes. He worked for years in a furniture factory and battled four-time world champion boxer Roberto Durán on national television.

He signed with and has been dropped by a major label. He has opened for Bonnie Raitt, Mark Knopfler, and John Prine among many other headliners, and makes some incredible music along the way.  He tackles all subjects and normally gives then a wink of the eye.

I saw Paul at The Biscuit this year, as he opened for B.B. King, and immediately knew I wanted him to sit on The Couch and he will be doing so Monday. We will hear some of the fantastic music off of his newest album Pimps & Preachers – which Paul described as a history of his family!

Then Kelly Richey will join me. Kelly has been described as “Stevie Ray Vaughan trapped in a woman’s body with Janis Joplin screaming to get out.” The Kentucky native has based herself in Cincinnati with her band.

They released Carry The Light in 2008. Back then, I reviewed it on my blog in this post and at that time wrote “This woman knows her way around an ax. She has fingers that, at times, must burst into flames , while at other times they sensually trace along the fretboard of her guitar.”

She has taken the time and become a True Purpose Coach, Dream Coach and Health & Wellness Coach; assisting people in finding their way in this world.

Add to that, her involvement in a program called Music For Change.  In their information it reads;  mission is to 'The mission of the organization’s programs is to bring today’s curriculum standards to life through music, while recognizing the importance of music education in the development and growth of the whole child.'

We will talk with Kelly about how her music, the record label she started and her newest passions all exist in her world.

We will take your calls and questions for both guests at 1.347.633.9400.

The live interactive chat room opens 20 minutes before show time. Follow this link HERE and click on the Chat Now icon. Come hang with the fans and musicians who visit each week.

Remember, unless you take the two minutes to register, you will not be able to participate in the chat room or send me questions to ask Paul or Kelly, but you will still hear the show.

So tune in on Monday evening or remember, you can always listen anytime after the show ends from the player HERE or check out Music On The Couch for additional artist information, and show recaps.

You can download to your iTunes and even subscribe to the show for weekly automatic downloads, from my iTunes page.

NEW MUSIC

Voices to hear HQs has seen a very productive week as far as receiving new music through the mail. Now we're not doing a Simply Six or review of these artists yet, we wanted to alert our faithful readers to their existence. This may be a semi regular feature where we mention some of what's out there.

Stephen Luke No Man's Land: A blend of roots and rocks with his songs telling stories of life and death. His album is out on Kelly Richey's label.

Lori Lieberman Gun Metal Sky: Lori has been recording her music since the seventies with Capitol Records. Her newest is on Drive On Records. It includes four covers, including her hit "Killing Me Softly" and her original songs.

Chris Huff Death and Texas: His newest album he experiments with pop, rock and reggae. Chris has been recording for the past decade and continues to grow as an artist.

Chris Huff North Cathedral Way: Chris' first album and more of a roots/rock style with some dylan style blues thrown in.

Divorcees Last of the Free Men: A country sound that rocks, this album tells the stories of small town life and the people that live there and dream of more.

Zydecosis Zydeco All Night: More than just a gimmick this band takes classic rock songs and re interprets them as zydeco songs.

SIMPLY SIX: Kelly Richey

We just talked about Kelly Richey in our Spotlight and now we have a Simply Six with her.

1. For many artists, they cite a defining moment for themselves when they knew they wanted to be a singer. For many it was the appearance of Elvis on the Ed Sullivan show, to another generation it was the Beatles’ appearance on Sullivan half a decade later. Is there such a defining moment for you?

Listening to my parents Tom Jones records. I also had the Monkey's record with Last Train To Clarksville!!! I still love that song. I grew up playing piano and singing, I loved to sing and knew it was something I would do at a very young age!

2. When you’re not creating music what are you listening to? Who are some of your favorites?

I love to listen to ambient music through internet radio. I love traditional jazz and a great jazz trio is my favorite!

3. What would you say is your greatest moment so far as an artist, either on record or live?

My 3rd CD titled "Live At Tommy's On Main".

4. Do you believe music can change the world or is just something to listen to? How much can music influence current events?

Yes, I feel that music has changed the world in many ways and it has changed my life on many occasions. It's one of the greatest art forms that we have!!! Music allows us to express our deepest feelings both with and without lyrics. Music is universal. When we engage in our world, music is a powerful tool, capable of communicating our thoughts, feelings and beliefs, without which, democracy would surely suffer the effects

5. How has technology affected the music industry? How has technology affected your career as a musician?

I believe technology has effected the music industry in so many ways, both positive and negative! It has made things possible in the recording world that were not imaginable only a few decades ago. Technology has allowed me to be an independent artist and to record and release my own CDs. The outcome of technology whether in music or any other field, depends of us, the user and the listener. If we are responsible and honest, technology will help to make many more things possible in the years to come while preserving the integrity of the music each o us loves.
6. Now for my Barbara Walters question: If you were a pair of shoes what type of shoes would you be?
My favorite pair of black Harley boots that I've worn for 12 years...they just keep getting better!!!

This song is "The Longest Road" from her album Speechless.

SPOTLIGHT: Kelly Richey

Kelly Richey is a blues guitarist/singer born in Lexington Kentucky but now based out of Cincinnati, Ohio. "Stevie Ray Vaughn trapped in a woman's body with Janis Joplin screaming to get out" is how one critic described Kelly.

Kelly took up the piano as her first instrument of choice as a youngster before moving on to the drums. Her Dad decided any other instrument had to be quieter for her to practice at home and told her he would buy her whatever other instrument she wanted to learn. She picked the guitar and was soon inseparable from it. Practicing wherever she went, she was never without her guitar.

In 1986 she joined the group Stealin' Horses. By 1990 she had formed her own band, The Kelly Richey Band. She has built her reputation on endless touring throughout the United States and Europe. She has created her own label, Sweet Lucy Records, and has released ten albums between herself as a solo artist and with her band.

Her newest album is Carry The Light. You can read her blog here.

This is the title song from that album.
