Simply Six: The Weekenders

1. For many artists, they cite a defining moment for themselves when they knew they wanted to be a singer. For many it was the appearance of Elvis on the Ed Sullivan show, to another generation it was the Beatles’ appearance on Sullivan half a decade later. Is there such a defining moment for you?

I've always been a drummer and guitar player that focused on instrumental projects simply because we could never find the right singer.  One day I was singing in the car and my girlfriend  told me I should sing. It took some convincing and practice before I felt comfortable but I think she was onto something.

2. When you’re not creating music what are you listening to? Who are some of your favorites?

Medeski, Martin and Wood is my favorite band of all time. Their approach, style, mindset, talent and groove is unmatched. After 20 years they are still exciting to me.

3. What would you say is your greatest moment so far as an artist, either on record or live?

Everytime we play live and it clicks is the greatest moment. It keeps getting better and better.

4. Do you believe music can change the world or is just something to listen to? How much can music influence current events?

Music sets the mood, affects the culture and has proved to be a catalyst in many movements.  I'd like to see some sparks fly again. I think it's been a while since a prolific artist has really stirred the pot.

5. How has technology affected the music industry? How has technology affected your career as a musician?

Technology allowed me to build my own recording studio with a few thousand dollars.  I recorded the entire album in my spare bedroom and never felt hindered by the quality of my gear.  It's crazy what a few decent mics and a computer can achieve.

6. Now for my Barbara Walters question: If you were a pair of shoes what type of shoes would you be?

Saucony Jazz.
