| Biography: Anson Carter is a big man with a big voice and he fronts a band with a sound that’s as deep and wide as the Texas landscape he loves. Carter became an underground phenomenon in 2007, when he cut the anthemic ode to Corpus Christi’s favorite fast food “Whataburger #5.” Carter’s bold vocal style and the song’s punchy rhythm track made fans out of everyone who heard it. Carter’s new album, 100 Degrees In The Shade, was an in house effort. Carter collaborated with fellow musician, Mike Bowen, and produced it together. “We started recording in October of 2010,” Carter explains. “It took us almost a year to complete, not because we were being picky, but because my touring and work schedules limited us to a couple of hours a week. The energy Carter and the band put into their shows is evident on every track. Everything was laid down live, with no autotuning. If a part didn’t work, they played it over until all the songs came together. Chad Hudson, Mickey Jack Cones and Arlis Albritton wrote “One of Those Days,” a mid-tempo rocker and the album’s first single. The song looks back on a summer full of home runs, dips in the creek and slow dances with your sweetie. “Chad’s a great songwriter and a native Texan” Carter says. “He captures the kind of summer feelings we dream about all winter long.” The stinging guitar solo and subtle cymbal accents add to the tune’s appeal. “Sweet Dreams” show off the band’s more romantic side. Carter wrote “Sweet Dreams” for his wife to express the loneliness of life on the road. His vocal here is a warm as the memory of a goodnight kiss. “I played the lap steel on this track,” Carter says. “I wanted to capture that dreamy, mystic feel you get when you’re missing someone you love. The steel has that lonesome sound and it was an afterthought while we were mixing down the song.” The Anson Carter Band has been going strong since 2009, slowly building up their fan base. They play two or three nights a week, doing more than 100 one nighters every year. Whataburger’s corporate headquarters even toyed with the idea of using Carter’s “Whataburger’s #5” as a theme song, but it was not to be. Undaunted, Carter and the boys will continue their grueling schedule of one nighters to support 100 Degrees In The Shade. “This is a band, not me with a backing group,” Carter stresses. “We make good music and we enjoy ourselves onstage. We play clean, clear and extremely loud; we always get the crowds moving. We’re so energetic, they have no option but to get involved.” |
