1. For many artists, they cite a defining moment for themselves when they knew they wanted to be a singer. For many it was the appearance of Elvis on the Ed Sullivan show, to another generation it was the Beatles’ appearance on Sullivan half a decade later. Is there such a defining moment for you?
After a few years of going to devotional chant events, I felt a longing to lead chanting myself. Eventually there were a number of things that happened that pointed me in the direction of chanting, singing, and writing music. I never wanted to "be a singer" per se, but wanted to use music as a vehicle to touch and open my heart.2. When you’re not creating music what are you listening to? Who are some of your favorites?
I enjoy the chant artists like Snatam Kaur and Krishna Das. I also love the torch song singers, like Peggy Lee, Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday, and Julie London.3. What would you say is your greatest moment so far as an artist, either on record or live?
My new album, "Awake to Love" is a wonderful step for me and has brought me to a new level of song-writing and production. I love that the songs are universally spiritual. No one is left out!4. Do you believe music can change the world or is just something to listen to? How much can music influence current events?
I don't know how much music can influence current events but I do know that it can open our hearts and help us to connect deeply with ourselves and others.5. How has technology affected the music industry? How has technology affected your career as a musician?
Technology has opened things up for the independent musician and allowed us to record and distribute our music without the usual gatekeepers. This is freeing! I can create the music that most speaks to me without worrying at all about how it will be received by a record company. And with the internet, I can reach so may people throughout the world who I would never know otherwise! This is so exciting!6. Now for my Barbara Walters question: If you were a pair of shoes what type of shoes would you be?
Black slip-on ballet slippers with an open toe that are sparkled with rhinestones and crystals. A touch of splash and practicality all in one!
